Information about Lead (II) Carbonate / CAS 598-63-0

Historically, Lead (II) Carbonate (PbCO3) was used extensively in pigments, glazes, and stabilizers.  Due to its toxicity, its use is heavily regulated in certain industries.  However, its excellent durability, opacity, and resistance to weathering still makes it a valuable additive in industrial paints and coatings.

In addition to its applications in coatings, PbCO3 is used as a synthetic reagent for synthetic chemistry including its implementation as a stabilizer in the manufacturing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In more advanced research applications for photovoltaic cells, scientists at the University of Zululand synthesized Lead Telluride (PbTe) and Lead Selenide (PbSe) nanoparticles using Lead Carbonate (PbCO₃) as a precursor.
