Spicing Up Chemistry Week: ProChem’s Chili Cookoff Heats Up Mole Day

At ProChem Inc., we believe chemistry isn’t just confined to the lab—it’s everywhere, even in your favorite bowl of chili. To celebrate National Chemistry Week and this year’s American Chemical Society theme, “The Hidden Life of Spices,” our team turned up the heat with a spirited Chili Cookoff on October 23rd—Mole Day, a beloved date in the chemistry community that honors Avogadro’s number (6.022 × 10²³).
Eight team members brought their best chili creations to the table, each one showcasing a unique blend of spices, textures, and culinary chemistry. From smoky chipotle to tangy tomatillo, the lineup was as diverse as our team—and just as bold.

After a delicious round of tasting and voting, one chili stood out from the rest: Ivan Ramos, one of our talented production chemists, wowed the crowd and claimed the title of ProChem Chili Champion. He took home the coveted chef’s hat and first-place spoon, earning bragging rights and a permanent place in our flavor hall of fame.
And here’s the twist—it was Ivan’s first time ever making chili! His winning, classic chili recipe was a testament to the power of chemistry, precision, and a dash of creative courage. Clearly, his lab skills translate beautifully to the kitchen.

Second place went to Steven Wilson, whose creamy white chicken chili impressed tasters with its comforting flavor and perfect balance of spice. Erica Zimolzak claimed third place honors with a bold, fiery entry that had everyone reaching for water—her chili was unanimously voted the spiciest of the bunch!
The cookoff wasn’t just about food—it was about celebrating the science behind spices, the joy of experimentation, and the camaraderie that makes ProChem Inc. a place where innovation and fun go hand in hand.
