Metal β-Diketonates

Metal β-diketonates – like metal acetylacetonate (AcAc) or 2,4-pentanedionate and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionates (TMHD) – are a class of metal complexes that have the general formula M(AcAc)_n or M(TMHD)_n, where M represents a metal ion and AcAc/TMHD represents the β-diketonate ligand. The n value denotes the number of ligands coordinating to the metal ion.^1,2 The β-diketonate ligand is a bidentate chelating ligand that coordinates to the metal ion through its two oxygen atoms in a square planar geometry. This coordination geometry is often observed for metal ions with a d⁸ electronic configuration.¹ The metal β-diketonates are usually stable, volatile, and soluble in organic solvents compounds. They can be prepared by reacting metal salts with β-diketonate ligands in suitable organic solvents or water.^1-7  

Metal β-diketonates are widely used in various applications such as catalysts,³ precursors for metal oxide thin films,⁴ nanomaterials,⁵ energy – efficient emissive materials,⁶ and more.⁷
